CHAPTER 16

PAPERS FALLING

Taking back doors and alleyways, Golay was able to get a good distance between the killer and himself. He called a cab instead of returning to his car in fear someone would be watching it. He gave the cabby directions to his house. Though the cabby was reluctant to go so far, Golay offered double. After being on the road for more than half an hour, he was finally able to gain control of his nerves and calm down. However, his nerves did not stay that way. Near his house, the taxi had to pull over for two fire trucks. Golay thought nothing of it until the cab was approaching the long street he lived on. Before they turned, Golay could see that the smoke was coming from his street. He told the driver to keep on going. Though he appeared confused, the cabby kept going straight without much hesitation. Golay looked down the street as they passed. He could see, in the faint distance, two fire trucks putting out a house fire. The cab went another mile, but Golay kept staring out the window, wondering if his mother had gotten out, wondering if she was safe, wondering what to do if he lost her, wondering.

The cab driver was the first to break the silence. “Where to now?”

“I don’t know.” Golay looked down at the tin box on his lap. He had forgotten about the box since they’d passed his street. Golay opened it. Inside was an assortment of different bank statements, accounting balance sheets, cash flow records, the works. To the common eye, even to most accountants, it would look normal. However, Golay caught its significance. He quickly closed the box and told the driver to take him back to the city.

An hour later, in a hotel room obtained under one of his aliases, he called down to the desk to be woken up with breakfast and the morning paper at seven. Then he locked himself in and wedged a chair under the door handle. He dumped the contents of the tin box on the bed and plunged into them. By the time the sun rose, he had cross-checked each statement and report three times to discover that, through multiple money transfers between multiple accounts, millions of dollars were disappearing and reappearing, though there was no evidence of where the money was going or where it was coming from.

He pulled his gun out when he heard a knock on the door. He checked the time—7:03 a.m. He went to the door and looked through the peephole. A young maid stood in the hall with his breakfast of eggs, coffee, and toast. He opened the door and retrieved his food and newspaper. Golay figured the maid would think him rude since he closed the door in her face with no tip. But that was no matter. He went back to his bed and set his breakfast on the nightstand before again checking his work.

The morning paper fell off his tray onto the floor.
